Autumn is well underway; the darkness is upon us sooner and the weather is most certainly getting colder. Leaves are falling and although the colours might be beautiful, some DIY is in order. Without adequate preparation, the harsher weather conditions that start making an appearance as we transition into winter will wreak havoc on various aspects of your garden, such as your wooden fence. We want to help you take precautions and give you some tips and tricks to get started:
Have A Visual Check
It is well worth taking a wander along the existing fence line to check for any visible signs of damage, rot or decay. If your fence is looking a little worse for wear, it may be worth considering whether or not to replace the current installation so that it will stand up to prolonged poor weather conditions or a storm.
Assess For Weak Spots
Start by taking a stroll along with your fence and check for any signs of damage, like rot or decay. Essentially, you need to establish if your fence is likely to survive winter in its current condition. If you answer is no then you might need to replace some fence panels or just fix the weak spots.
Clear Away Leaves & Debris
Move leaves and debris away from the fence line as leaves can trap moisture against the fence causing the timber to decay prematurely and faster than it naturally. Also, if you collect all of these leaves up you can use this to create compost for spring.
Waterproof Your Fence
Using wood oil and preservers will stop your fence by getting damaged, rotting & decaying. Essentially, you need to establish if your fence is likely to survive the winter months. If the answer is no then you might need to replace some fence panels or just fix the weak spots.
Remove Weak or Low Hanging Branches
If there are any weak or low hanging tree branches near your fence, it would benefit you to move them before they break and either hurt something or cause damage to your fence or home.
Ensure Posts Are Secure
Your fence should be fixed at least three feet deep into the soil so that it stays secure, even when the frost threatens to destruct. Please make sure to check posts regularly and fix them promptly if they appear to be leaning.
